Death of Joseph O’Connor
Joseph Daniel O’Connor, 88, of Fredericksburg passed away Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015, at Carriage Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center. He audited the books of the Fredericksburg Seniors every year.
Mr. O’Connor served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of Danbury High School in Danbury, Conn., and Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. He retired as an operations research analyst from the Naval Surface Weapons Center in Dahlgren. During his 30 years of service, he participated in radiation fallout testing, tested biological and chemical protective equipment for the armed forces and analyzed results of missile test launches from submarines. Mr. O’Connor was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and volunteered in the community at St. Mary Catholic Church, Meals on Wheels and the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Julia Padrun O’Connor; his children, Joseph O’Connor Jr. (Debbie) of Charlotte, N.C., Annette Sweeney (Robert) of Ramsey, N.J., Thomas O’Connor (Joyce), Elizabeth Jarrell (James, III) and Timothy O’Connor (Elizabeth) of Williamsburg; and 10 grandchildren.
A Mass of celebration was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, 3631 Lee Hill Drive, Fredericksburg VA 22408.
